Fundamental Performance Testing
Blower Door Science is based on the fundamentals of air pressure. Creation of a vacuum accelerates the rate at which leakage occurs. Air pressure at a vacuum of 75 Pascals is the commercial standard on which the building envelope leakage is established.
History of Blower Door Testing
Europe was the first to require Blower Door Testing for new construction. They made it a part of the EU Building Code in 2000. Energy costs in Europe are much higher than in the USA. That was an important reason that Europe understood the benefits of Blower Door Testing. It is important to properly insulate a structure. However, insulation is only one factor in establishing energy efficiency for a building.

The USA recognised the importance and benefits of Blower Door Testing and made it a part of the residential Building Code in 2015. The Building Code has been recently changed to require Whole-Building Pressurizaion Testing on all  Commercial Properties.  The new Building Code makes this testing a part of the Functional Performance Testing (FPT) requirement.

Gauge with Blower Door
A Blower Door passing score is important. Some testing companies merely set up the Blower Door instrumentation, run the test, and then leave. If the test does not provide a passing score the testing company makes no further effort. The testing company does not assist the General Contractor with finding the leakage. After the General Contractor does find the leakage the testing company can be hired again and paid the testing fee a second time. Commercial Blower Door MN serves our clients differently. We prepare the property before the test. If there is an issue, we do thermal imaging to find the leak. Thermal Imaging and retests are at no charge.
When we enter a building to perform a Whole-Building Pressurization Test we begin by doing a survey of the entire building.  We perform a pre-test procedure. This includes examining common leakage areas such as HVAC penetrations, skylight penetrations. Specialized envelope penetration devices such as cyclonic dust collectors are disconnected and the apertures sealed. We've done over 4,000 tests since 2016.
